Definition of a Climbing Word

By Stewart Green, About.com

Abseil

A German term for rappelling or sliding down a rope in a controlled descent by using a belay and rappel device. The term is commonly used in Europe, rather than the French word Rappel, which is used in the United States. In British slang, this descent is called “abbing off.”
