Stewart M. Green

Stewart M. Green, a native Coloradoan, lives in Colorado Springs at the foot of Pikes Peak and the Colorado Rockies. A life-long climber, he heads out to the cliffs a few times a week. He has been a freelance photographer and writer since 1977, based in Colorado and traveling all over the great American West as well as the rest of the United States and the world in search of memorable images and experiences to write about. Since the mid-1980s Stewart has worked as a contract photographer and writer for Falcon Publishing and Globe Pequot Press, writing 18 books and photographing a couple more. Some of his books include Rock Climbing Europe, Rock Climbing Colorado, Rock Climbing Utah, Rock Climbing Arizona, Rock Climbing New England, Scenic Driving Colorado, Scenic Driving California, Scenic Driving Back Country Byway, and Rocky Mountain National Park Pocket Guide. His photographs and writing are in lots of publications, including Climbing and Rock & Ice.

Experience:

Stewart began rock climbing at age 12 in 1965 at the cliffs in North Cheyenne Caņon, a Colorado Springs city park, when his older brother Mark dragged him up up The Pinnacle. He hasn't been the same since! Through the 1970s he did lots of fabulous climbing and lots of first ascents and early ascents of some cool stuff in Colorado and Utah, including the 6th ascent of Castleton Tower, the 3rd ascent of Standing Rock, and the 2nd ascent of Moses. Since then he has continued climbing around the world, discovering new areas and cranking some amazing routes. He continues developing new cliffs in Colorado, doing first ascents, and repeating classic climbs. Stewart is also a senior guide for Front Range Climbing Company based in Colorado Springs.

Education:

Stewart graduated with a B.A. degree in Anthropology from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS), and later earned a M.F.A. in Creative Nonfiction Writing from Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland.

You'll learn how to use hands and feet to scale vertical cliffs; how to climb safe so you'll head home at the end of the day; and some of the best places to go climbing in this wide wonderful world. Climbing is a way to connect with the natural world, to venture away from city and street and find a new home in the high mountains. So discover the magic of climbing with me on About.com, turn off the television, and head out to the crags. Make your life a grand adventure. And just remember: Climbing may be hard, but it's easier than growing up!
